Windows Under the Hood

Free lesson 1 of 10 from Windows for Beginners — Windows as a power user — CMD, PowerShell and how it really works. No account, no card.

You use Windows — now understand it

You click icons every day, but under that friendly desktop is a serious operating system. This course takes you from casual user to power user: someone who opens a black terminal window on purpose and knows exactly what they're doing. It's the on-ramp before the advanced Windows for Hackers course, so we keep it calm and beginner-friendly.

A light mental model of Windows

How each lesson works

There are no videos here. You learn by reading the theory, seeing the tools and the method, then doing it yourself on your own Windows PC. Stuck? Every challenge has a Show solution with the exact steps.

⚙️ Method

  1. Theory — understand why it works.
  2. Tools + method — what to open and the approach.
  3. Challenge — try it yourself.
  4. Show solution — step-by-step, only if you're stuck.
🎯 Challenge: Open the Start menu, type cmd, and press Enter. In the black window that appears, type ver and then hostname. Note what each one tells you about your machine.
Show solution
  • ver → prints your Windows version number — useful to know exactly which build you're on.
  • hostname → prints your computer's name on the network.
  • That black window is the Command Prompt. You just ran your first two commands — welcome to the power-user side.
