Why Windows Matters and Building Your Lab

Free lesson 1 of 10 from Windows for Hackers — Understand and attack the world's most-targeted OS. No account, no card.

Why hackers study Windows

Windows runs the overwhelming majority of corporate desktops and a huge share of servers. That means most enterprise attacks, penetration tests, and red-team engagements happen against Windows or against the directory service that manages it. If you want to work in offensive security, deep Windows knowledge is not optional.

Windows is also a large, feature-rich system with decades of backward compatibility. That breadth creates a wide attack surface: legacy protocols, misconfigured permissions, forgotten services, and complex trust relationships. Attackers who understand the system beat those who only memorize tools.

This course teaches you the operating system first: how it is built, how identity and permissions work, and where weaknesses commonly appear. Every technique here is meant for lab practice and authorized testing.

Building a safe lab

Never practice on machines you do not own or lack written permission to test. Instead, build an isolated virtual lab. Install a Type 2 hypervisor such as a free desktop virtualization product, then create a Windows evaluation virtual machine using a legitimate evaluation image from the vendor.

Snapshots turn mistakes into a two-minute reset. Use them generously.

🎯 Challenge: Stand up a Windows evaluation VM on a host-only network, log in, run winver to confirm the build number, then take a clean snapshot named baseline.

⚖️ For authorized, legal testing only.
